Light westerly winds rise to southerly 20 to 25 mph by Thursday with high temperatures near 25 and lows around 20. Divorce petitions listed for Mittlestedt and others, plus drunkenness and intoxication fines. Various local fire and alarm reports and newborn notices from St. Luke's and area addresses through Feb 3.
A list of violations with defendants and fines: Speeding for Paul Bibby 5 dollars, leaving scene for Munsell 15 dollars, double parking for Wickie and Lahr 1 dollar each, illegal turn involving multiple parties, meter violations for several names, all with costs. many individuals listed paid one dollar fifty cents.
Ticket chairmen for the Monkey Island project will meet in the Veterans of Foreign Wars club rooms Thursday at 7 30 p m. Louis Dvorak announced the gathering Tuesday. Tickets will be distributed at the meeting for the April 11 band concert and dance at Memorial Coliseum with Ad Island at Bever Park. Labor fraternal and civic need create a community drive to raise funds for the island where Commissioner Dick Parks Jones promised city care for animals after completion.
Glenn F. Wilson of 336 Fourth Avenue SW and Charles E. of 1601 Second Avenue SE were fined 25 dollars and costs each in police court Tuesday for drunkenness. They were arrested about 9 36 p m in a downtown hotel lobby. Detective Frank Bukacek said Wilson molested other guests after being asked to leave by hotel management.
L J Radtke of Des Moines, executive secretary of the Iowa Restaurant Association, spoke in Cedar Rapids backing a bill to let the state Department of Agriculture conduct more thorough inspections of 6000 restaurants and 1260 hotels. He argued restaurant men should solve sanitation issues, noting most want clean facilities, while funding shortfalls hinder inspections. The bill proposes 7500 in state funds, matched, to finance a two year program including a staffer to assist high school groups and training.
School board member cites Kenwood jammed with limited expansion room and Polk in oral use while Tyler also near capacity. Pre school census to guide redistricting and future staffing. calls to recruit teachers from colleges as salaries cited for next year.
Two men pled guilty to selling cars at retail without a dealer license and were fined 100 dollars plus costs by Justice of the Peace H. A. Churchill. Max Smithson, 30, 307 Seventh Avenue SE, paid the fine after pleading guilty. M. E. Powers, 63, 627 Ninth Street SE, switched from innocent to guilty and paid. Sheriff P. J. Whittemore said additional warrants remain for similar arrests.
New York UP Tenor Luitz Melchior of the Metropolitan Opera sprained his big toe Monday night during Die Walkure delaying the second act 15 minutes. His foot gave way as he braced himself against a tree trunk while the magic sword Nothing was retrieved. He continued the performance with splints after brief rest.
Tom Suchomel of Cedar Rapids died at 1 a.m. Tuesday at his home aged 74. Born Oct 24 1872 on a Cedar County farm he joined Cedar Rapids Gas Co as lamp lighter in 1884 and rose to superintendent before retiring in 1941. He married Pek Hladky Sept 30 1908 surviving wife two sons and siblings. active in Bohemian Savings Loan Association and local fire and fraternal groups. Funeral arrangements pending Kuba funeral home.
Services for Mrs W H Lenders widow of a former Penick and Ford plant manager will be held at 3 30 p m in the family home conducted by Rev D A Loferski The cremation committal will follow her death Monday at 2101 Grande avenue SE Cedar Rapids plans indicate funeral procedures and location.
David Harrison Corbett aged 59 of 2343 B avenue NE died in a local hospital at 10 05 am Tuesday after a brief illness. Born December 14 1887 in Scotch Grove he lived in Cedar Rapids 21 years and worked five years as a sheet metal worker at Collins Radio Company. He belonged to Kenwood Press church cello and had two brothers Royal Corbett Shenandoah and How ard Corbett Clinton. Services will be in Turner chapel at a time to be announced and friends may call.
Services for Mrs. Grant, who died Monday at 2125 Wilson Avenue SW, will be conducted. The notice notes funeral arrangements to be announced locally.
In Kansas City three witnesses from Northern Natural testified on pipe line extension plans. Herbert Henderson of Cedar Rapids Iowa Electric Light and Power, Ed Jones St Paul city engineer, and W L Shuker superintendent of sales for Northern Natural explained sources and computing methods behind figures. Northern Natural serves Marshalltown Iowa.
In Elizabethtown Illinois 65 year old Ernest Board accidentally discharged a revolver while teaching a child to shoot. Board was struck in the chest and died. Police described the weapon as unloaded at the time of the incident.
Iowa lawmakers introduced bills to raise the beer tax from 1.24 to 4.34 per gallon to boost state school funding with 10 cents per gallon earmarked for the school fund. Other measures proposed stadium and fieldhouse construction aid for school districts, noting demand for athletic facilities. A workmen compensation bill on occupational disease was also introduced as the Senate urged Veterans Administration to use the Clin ton hospital for veterans' care.

DES MOINES AP The charge against Opal Dixon 35 said to have confessed a bank robbery was reduced to robbery by aggravation but she refused to plead guilty. A new charge of robbery by aggravation carries 25 years. life was mandatory on the prior bank with intent to rob. A new attorney was to be appointed for arraignment as Dixon disputed with counsel.
Kermit Eby, a longtime educator and union activist, clashed with AFL policy, pushed for tax reforms to fund schools, and was fired in 1943. He then joined the CIO and helped campaigns including Raymond McKeough for Senate. He later advised U.S. labor and education commissions and studied wage profit dynamics with Robert R. Nathan.

The Ce dar Rapids youth center Club One-9-Teen will suspend operations pending a reorganization after a survey. Lt General Walton Walker announced activation of the 108th division reserve units in Cedar Rapids Iowa as two new outfits. Major Donald Buck of the Linn County Reserve Officers Association will show a movie Combat Film at the Chamber building this evening. Twenty five members of the bureau are expected to attend with a short program at 1:30 p.m.
