Cuban leader Fulgencio Batista crushed an incipient revolt after arresting army and navy chiefs and suspending civil liberties for 15 days. Col Angel A. Gonzalez of the navy and Col Jose Pedraza of the army were implicated. Pedraza fled to the United States while Gonzalez surrendered after a tense stand at La Punta.
BERLIN INS The Rev Martin Niemoeller the fighting pastor once defying Hitler has become a Roman Catholic believer. The move could cancel his Protestant pastorate and allow his release from the concentration camp while his family says the conversion is independent of his status. His health has deteriorated during long confinement.
Tokyo reports Foreign Minister Yosuke Matsuoka told the house budget committee that President Roosevelt does not seek war with Japan and hopes remain for better Japan America relations despite the Axis pact. He described the tripartite pact as a peace effort to curb European war spread. A Japanese landing near British Hong Kong was disclosed. Spokesman Koh Ishii said Tokyo will ignore Netherlands objections to East Indies ambitions.
Two people were injured and three drivers arrested after two separate crashes within twenty minutes Monday evening in Cedar Raund. Sylvester Miller, 72, Morley, listed in fair condition at Mercy hospital Tuesday morning, sustained chest injuries and a fractured collarbone when the car he rode in, driven by H L Jamison, 50, Anamosa, overturned after colliding with a machine driven by Donald Dunn, 29, Sigourney, at Ninth Street and Sixteenth Avenue SW. Both Dunn and Jamison faced traffic violations charges.
The British Middle East command reported Imperial Army of the Nile units swept into Cirene 45 miles west of Derna as part of the push toward Benghazi. Italian forces abandoned their first line on the Agordat Barentu line in Eritrea and retreated before pursuing British units amid difficult mountainous terrain. The Royal Air Force said a raid on Castel Benito near Tripoli destroyed Italian planes and dropped several tons of explosives.
Italian high command admitted withdrawals in Eritrean positions east of Agordat and Barenta. A Tuesday communique said Monday night torpedo boats in the Red Sea attacked a fortified British convoy, launched nine torpedoes, and reportedly struck British ships.
An automobile struck a bottle of milk carried by Luther Taylor 63 as he crossed Main Street in Kansas City. Taylor was unhurt.
Two men found a missing two engine Army bomber with seven aboard buried on a mountainside about 70 miles south of Olympia. The January 18 flight from McChord to Muroc ended with all on board dead. Remains likely to be dynamited after salvage.

Earle G Nichol was named chairman of the retail merchants bureau of the Chamber of Commerce at the annual meeting Tuesday. He succeeds Willis Mohn who was commended for his 1940 work. The bureau promoted sales and events including a centennial guest reception, a Raider All Star game promotion, financing for a Christmas parade, a Soap issue music revival, and underwriting part of the Icecapade expenses. The group also backed a proposed single Thanksgiving Day in a national movement.
Bicycle licenses arrive as Traffic Police prepare to enforce the city bicycle registration law. Captain Gordon Hughes announced registration starts Friday at 11 am with hours 10 am to 7 pm on weekdays and 9 am to 6 pm on Saturdays. Owners are warned to bring the bike for inspection, clean the frame serial number, and use the rear entrance marked Bicycle Registration.
President Roosevelt will send the name of the next ambassador to Great Britain to the Senate on Thursday. Secretary Stephen T. Early announced he does not yet know the appointee, but said Britain has accepted the choice.
Twenty four injured when a large Denver and Rio Grande Western passenger locomotive exploded while being pushed into the southwest rail yards. The boiler and cab were hurled into the air, striking an express car, while motorists and workers suffered injuries. Colorado residents aboard and onlookers were treated at nearby hospitals. company officials cited low water in the boiler as a probable cause.
Montana Senator Wheeler claimed the United States had no plane suitable for modern warfare. He cited Army inventory of 659 planes, with 37 possibly modernizable and many deemed ineffective, urging openness on aircraft holdings and opposing British aid without broader production.
