In Texas, John Newton identified as part of a trio who robbed Coleman National Bank of $23,750.
In Havana on Saturday night the Mendieta government tested its grip by resolving the Cuban Electric dispute. It ordered the property returned to American and Foreign Power company, led by Electric Bond and Share, with Federico Porro Orfilia taking charge despite worker opposition. Gas service failed in Havana and tram cars halted as power ebbed and flowed. troops guarded facilities islandwide. Batista held troops in reserve while clashes erupted with students and anti regime handbills circulated.
Los Angeles AP Kay Francis motion picture star filed for divorce from actor director husband Kenneth McKenna. She cites persistent harassment and threats to her personal choices and manner of living. The couple wed Avalon Catlin Island January 17 1981 and separated December 18. Francis has been married three times.
Berlin AP reports Wilhelm Teudt, a Germanic cult leader, published a hymn book revising seventy five psalms to purge Jewish taint. His Eighty seventh Psalm praises German lands and ancestors, claims Aryan Christ, and calls for pruning of Old Testament elements.
Two Sapulpa police officers Tom Brumley and C. P. Lloyd and two gunmen Aussie Elliott and Raymond Moore were killed in a highway shootout north of Sapulpa. Wounded was Eldon Wilson, a bank and highway robber accomplice who escaped from an Osage County jail in Pawhuska weeks earlier. National guardsmen were placed on alert by Governor Murray after the sheriff sought aid following the fatal confrontation.
The Gazette reveals Cedar Rapids residents pooled gifts including a washing machine and bedding for Mrs. George White and her nine children after her husband died of pneumonia. An electric washer was delivered, a reader offered help, and the Public Health Nursing bureau loaned sheets and pillowcases. Rep Keller leads the drive to keep 4 million CWA workers on payroll with possible Republican support needed. Aimed amendments include adding 1.5 billion for May 1935 operations and 50 million for educational relief.
Adolph Bremer, banking and brewing figure, issues a public plea for $200,000 ransom and safe return of his son Edward Bremer. He offers cooperation and secrecy, instructs Edward to write a letter, and says authorities will be kept out of the contact unless the son is returned. Bremer vows no pursuit if the son is freed.
