Death penalty support at near half-century high
Gallup results show 72 percent of Americans favor the death penalty for murder with 1,523 adults surveyed January 11 to 14. The poll notes that support would fall to 56 percent if life imprisonment were certain and to 51 percent if the penalty did not deter murder, while 64 percent say the penalty is unfairly applied to the poor.
