White House strengthens flood standards for federal projects
The administration will require building to 2 feet above the 100 year flood level for standard projects and 3 feet for critical facilities, with some applying 500 year flood elevations. The move follows a major Corps report on flood risk and a NOAA forecast of rising coastal flooding. Officials say the policy raises costs modestly but may cut future recovery expenses. Georgetown Climate Center’s Vicki Arroyo welcomes the science based approach and calls for broader adoption.

Cedar Rapids adopts flood standards under federal rules
Cedar Rapids enacts flood protection measures aligned with Obama administration guidance after the 2008 flood. New construction is barred in the 100 year flood plain except in historic districts and viable commercial corridors such as downtown New Bohemia Czech Village Kingston Village and Ellis Boulevard NW. Buildings must be flood proofed or elevated. The federal courthouse sits above flood levels and the city advances a $570 million flood control system to protect to the 2008 flood level.
