Safety reforms rose from decades of tank car accidents
Regulators and industry tightened pressurized DOT-111A tank cars after 1970s deaths of rail workers and responders. Upgrades included puncture shields and fire insulation, while non-pressurized cars stayed largely unchanged. Repeated NTSB findings highlighted enduring deficiencies amid numerous derailments and spills across the 1990s to 2010s, including Lac-Megantic and Casleton incidents.
