Paris reports seaplane flown by Mario Stoppani returning from Brazil crashed in the South Atlantic on Wednesday. Westfalen air mail steamer crew spotted the plane in flames and only Stoppani survived. earlier messages said engine trouble forced a return toward Brazil.
Washington dispatch describes W. Clark, a Dallas silk hosiery peddler turned temporary merchant, attending a little business conference. He offers a ten point plan labeled the Clark long range recovery program advocating a back to the farm movement.
Iola Kansas AP report says Herbert Hoover claimed he never kept any salary from his President, Commerce Secretary, Food Administrator, or Belgian relief post. He said he placed earnings in a separate account and donated to charities and staff, noting annual $10,000 checks to San Francisco welfare funds.
Iola Kansas Charles F. Scott reports Hoover warned the country could fall under fascism if the New Deal is defeated and that overturning the New Deal in 1940 would be the duty of patriotic Americans.
A secretary to former President Herbert Hoover on Wednesday defended a Charles F. Scott report that Hoover gave all his public warnings to charity and welfare causes. The secretary said the statements are substantially true, clarifying Hoover’s intent in public service.
The state department said Francisco Franco has agreed to release the American tanker Nantucket Chief and its crew after it left Palma. The ship was seized by insurgent forces Jan 17 while carrying petroleum to Barcelona. Captain J E Lewis and most crew were American nationals. vessel owned by Nantucket Chief Steamship Co. The United States made formal representations via Ambassador Claude G Bowers. Captain Lewis is to be released within a few days.
London reports that Britain will adopt special measures to end submarine piracy in the Mediterranean after secret reports claim Generalissimo Franco ordered resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare against supply ships to Spanish loyalists. Four vessels, three British and one Dutch, have been attacked by submarines in the last three days.
Adolph Hupka, 20, of New Jersey, was shot Nov 9 while fleeing Sheriff James Smith during an attempt to escape custody. He pled not guilty to a breaking and entering charge under the alias Joe Blake, and is hospitalized at Mercy with paralysis below the waist. A judge authorized his release on his own bond to return home.
Federal Judge Albert L. Reeves condemned a reign of terror in Kansas City as he sentenced seven of fifty convicts in the 1936 vote fraud purge. Sentences ranged from probation to four years in prison.
Attorney General Cummings announced that the Justice Department plans to try 24 major oil companies and 46 individuals in Madison Wisconsin next fall on new anti trust charges. The case grows from an indictment returned in December 1936 accusing firms of fixing gasoline prices in the Midwest. The trial depends on government readiness and will reuse the same prosecution team.
