Sledding at Mount Vernon hill preserves a winter tradition
Children Jamie Wolfe and Kalysta Wiedemann sled down Pres Hill on Mount Vernon’s Third Avenue North as locals recall a long winter ritual dating back to the 1800s. Former resident Ed Rogers, now in Iowa City, remembers coasting to Fifth Street and beyond. In the 1970s officials blocked the road and added parking limits to improve safety.
