New Parity Standard Takes Effect in Farm Price Measures
Washington reports a new parity standard used for farm price calculations. Prices averaged 94 percent of parity under the new rule, versus 98 percent under the old standard, with wages included in the base. Four Iowa drying plants now participate in the government price support program amid palatability concerns.

Forage Seed Shortage May Persist in coming years
Three Iowa State agronomists say the grass and legume seed shortage will endure due to rising demand. They note 1949 forage seed output rose 8 percent but not enough to cover 1950 needs, with alfalfa seed meeting demand while red clover fell short. Projections show demand climbing 40 percent by 1955 and 60 percent by 1960 from 1950 levels.

New Disease Threatens U.S. Oat Crop
The Agriculture Department reports an unidentified disease cutting oats yields in 1949 by about 12 percent from 1948. Dr. Robert Salter says red leafing followed by leaf death and mold growth marks the onset, with all varieties affected though older types fared better. Iowa leads production. Minnesota Illinois and Wisconsin provide over half. Federal state oat breeding will focus on 1950 to find resistance.
