Tarawa Atoll Airbase Now Fully Operational Hawkins Field
Tarawa Atoll Betio January 22. After a brutal campaign on the Gilbert Islands vast work by Sea Bees and all services has transformed Betio into a functioning airbase. The field named Hawkins Field honors a Marine hero who cleared three pillboxes. Runway expanded beyond 5,000 feet and a livable tent city, mess halls, water and cots now exist as planes land daily.

The Chicago and North Western railway announced a 25 million dollar purchase of war bonds in the fourth war loan drive. R L Williams, the road's chief executive, said funds were allocated to over 200 counties across Illinois Wisconsin Michigan Minnesota Iowa Nebraska South Dakota and Wyoming.
