Investors pushed the Dow Jones above 1000 in brisk trading on the New York Stock Exchange. UPI reports broad gains with 1,711 issues on the tape, while uncertainty kept the close tentative as volume neared 7 million shares in early trading.
Friday hog prices in Cedar Rapids show $37.50 to $38.00 for 200 to 230 lb butcher cattle, with lighter 230 to 240 lb cuts 25c lower and 240 to 250 lb cuts 50c down per 10 lb. Sows around $28.00 to $28.50, while heavier hogs face incremental deductions up to 260+ lb ranges. Sheep with lambs listed at $45 to $47 for shorn and $42 to $45 for wool lambs. Wilson Foods to host event in Cedar Rapids on Saturday with large stock volumes, APUSDA notes.
John Mitchell and H R Haldeman received a 29 day extension to appeal their Watergate convictions to the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Warren Burger granted the delay after new attorney Eugene Grossman said more time was needed. Without the extension, papers would be due January 7. Both were convicted of conspiracy perjury and obstruction of justice and face prison terms of 24 to 8 years.

A 49-year-old construction worker of European origin walked into a Montreal bar, drank a beer and two hot dogs, then attached a battery to wires in his shirt and detonated explosives. He died at hospital. no others injured. Witnesses recalled no warning and noted his recent marital separation.

Singapore entrepreneurs build crocodile farms to supply skins and handbags. Leah Liang Joo operates farms, a tannery, shops, and exhibits, expanding from radios and orchids to crocs. Crocodiles are raised for three years, then killed for skins. meat is marketed locally to attract visitors and buyers.

New York police report a one legged Brooklyn watchman, Harold Peterson, used a crutch to disarm a robber at a used car lot. He then fired with the gun the men carried, wounding one in the mouth and the other in the hand. The suspects, Anthony Modoffone and Julio Torres, both from Brooklyn, were hospitalized and charged with robbery.
