Iowans Find Changes In Man Not Germs Explain Outbreaks
Researchers from Ames reported at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting that explosive disease outbreaks arise from changes in the host rather than mutations in germs. Dr. Gowen and Dr. Zelle showed resistant mice can harbor virulent bacteria, while susceptible mice remain unharmed. They argue epidemics stem from chemical changes in individuals, not solely germ mutations, and note only a small fraction of virus molecules are active in causing disease.
