Iowan Life Professor Turned Rock Star in 1960s Band
Roseburg native Chris Johnson fronted Hercules and the Chicken Fat People, an early Bay Area act that opened for the Grateful Dead and others in the 1960s. Now a University of Iowa ophthalmology professor, he plays with a Grateful Dead tribute band and develops vision screening apps for underdeveloped regions. Johnson holds six degrees including a Penn State doctorate and has coauthored ophthalmology papers while pursuing a mobile glaucoma screening tool.
