Cedar Rapids police report copper thefts rose to 73 cases this year as copper prices top $2 per pound, with victims ranging from churches to factories. Burglaries declined in the past seven months, possibly reflecting an improving economy, while police adjust patrols accordingly.
McKinley Middle School in Cedar Rapids will cut electric bills through a collaboration with Kirkwood Community College SIFE students Sam's Club and Alliant Energy. The project includes energy audits new motion sensors lower wattage lamps and water restrictors. The effort aims to teach energy conservation and expand similar grants to other area schools.
The Hiawatha City Council will hold a 9 a.m. hearing on bonds not to exceed 5.2 million dollars for the PAETEC Business services project. PAETEC plans a 40,000 square foot office at Center Point Road and Ketelsen Drive to employ about 400 people. A sewer line break in Coralville caused untreated wastewater discharge into Muddy Creek and the Iowa River. The city is assessing damages and preparing repairs with Maxwell Construction crews on site. An AARP Johnson County led legislative forum is set for 2 p.m. Monday at the Iowa City Senior Center with Sen. Bolkcom Rep. Mascher and Sen. Dvorsky.
