Sloan Develops Electric Drying for High Moisture Corn
Iowa farmer Bill Sloan, 22, dries corn electrically using infrared bulbs and fans, claiming cost efficiency and even moisture reduction. The system avoids overdrying, works best in dry conditions, and Sloan notes higher moisture corn suits his hog operation. Sloan, a 1971 Iowa State grad, farms 500 acres near Alburnett with his father and runs 800 hogs yearly.

Future of Cooperatives Expands Into Livestock and Grain
Farm leaders anticipate a full service cooperative by 1980 with combines and trucks delivering grain to elevators and handling drying storage and marketing. Northwest Iowa cooperatives already market livestock in condominium feed lots while feeder pig cooperatives form regionally.

Farm Letter Defends Beef in Protein Compare
Susan Athoff of Linn County Extension argues that USDA data show 100 grams of immature raw soybeans contain 10.9 grams protein, immature cooked soybeans 9.8 grams, raw ground beef 17.9 grams, and cooked ground beef 24.2 grams, countering Willis Hansen’s soybean versus hamburger protein claim. Her letter notes some skeptics may doubt Hansen’s arithmetic.

Grain Sale Sparks Bipartisan Criticism In Iowa
An aide to Senator Dick Clark charges officials moved too late to fix an alleged unrealistic government corn sale from March. Buyers paid 1.32 to 1.42 per bushel but could now sell at 2.47. The aide notes 30 million bushels were sold on a grade basis with no down payment and no delivery deadline, and no interest or storage charges. A new order ten days earlier requires payment within 20 days and storage charges if not moved, shifting sale terms to an as is basis. The change increases costs and worsens deterioration for buyers and adds 11 million bushels to an overburdened transport system. The matter stems from a May reveal after a Clark Hughes Gazette investigation.
