Marvin Snyder, 45, of Onslow, died when his truck cab collided with a car on Highway 151 two miles north of Anamosa. The crash occurred about 8:30 a.m. as frost slicked the road. Robert Davis, 32, of Sun Prairie, Wis., driven the other car and was uninjured. Snyder’s cab rolled, he was thrown out, and the truck rolled into a ditch. He left a wife and four children, including daughter Marcia of Marion. Services set for Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian church. Friends may call at Hayden's.
The Iowa Water Pollution Control Commission gave Cedar Rapids a 90 day extension to finish final plans for expanding its sewage treatment facilities. The new deadline is Oct 1 to allow a pilot study of an experimental process that could slash expansion costs if successful. The extension follows a state order issued last December after a Cedar River fish kill highlighted plant overload.
Cedar Rapids city council held a Thursday session to finish year end tasks. It authorized interest coupon payments on city bonds, approved moving 150000 dollars from water works to the improvement fund, and ratified current payrolls. A donation of a 100 by 60 foot vacant parcel at Tenth Avenue and Eighth Street SE was received from One Two Three Corp and Louis Pocho bradsky Jr, president.
James A. Sammy Carr a Shellsburg resident died in Guadalajara Mexico on December 25 at age 54. Born February 15 1917 in Shellsburg he was an Air Force World War II veteran and operated Carr Aviation. Survived by sisters Mrs George Sutton Oak Park Illinois and Leona Rankin Palo. Memorial services Friday at Turner Chapel East at 1 30 p.m. conducted by Dr Marion Williams. Burial in Pale Cemetery. Many attendees at Thursday’s municipal court session were sent home due to no judge presiding. An assistant county attorney handled cases and set next appearance dates, with orders to be signed later. Those without attorneys faced continuances of one week. Judge August Hansell held a juvenile hearing and Judge John B Reilly a civil hearing, while Judge Loren Hullinger missed work after a slip on ice that cut his head.
A charge of unlawful use of a telephone against John Melsha 66 of 75 Wilson avenue SW was dismissed in municipal court on Wednesday. He faced allegations of intent to terrify and harass due to a March 14 phone call in which he allegedly threatened Jerry Copeland 69 Wilson avenue SW with injury.
Willard Kies, 27, of 941% M street SW, pled guilty in municipal court to a drunk driving count and was fined $300. His license was suspended for 120 days. He was arrested December 17 by Linn sheriff's deputies at Sixteenth avenue and Edgewood road SW.
Erick Gundacker and his sister Jennifer Gundacker were charged with marijuana possession in New Hampton and Park Towne Place NE. Both pled guilty in August and had sentencing delayed until December. Charges dismissed after meeting good behavior requirements for possession on June 25.
Gregory Wilde twenty one of 2324 First Avenue SW saw an arson charge dismissed in municipal court on a state motion. The alleged fire occurred at the First Avenue address on December seventeenth.
AP reports four people killed and about 35 missing after Villarrica Volcano eruption near Pucon in Chile’s southern lake region. Fire and rescue crews worked to locate missing, while authorities warned of ongoing volcanic activity and possible further evacuations.
William M. Schirm 80 of 319 Twentieth Street NW Cedar Rapids died after a long illness. Born Atkins December 30 1890 he married Lena K Ernst February 10 1915. He was a Trinity Lutheran member and survived by wife two daughters three sons a sister three brothers ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Services Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial Cedar Memorial. Friends may call at Turner chapel west and at the church. Memorials may be made to Trinity church memorial fund.
John R Overley died Wednesday after a brief illness at age 58. A former Corn King Co salesman for 26 years, he was born September 14, 1885 in Onslow and married Nellie Boswell August 21, 1921 in Anamosa. He was active at St Pauls United Methodist Church and several fraternal orders. Private services Friday at Turner Chapel East with burial at Cedar Memorial Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the cancer fund.
Frank J. Steff of 1420 First Avenue NW Cedar Rapids died suddenly Wednesday after a brief illness. Born in Czechoslovakia November 4, 1892 he came to the United States at 16. A sheetmetal worker formerly with Maresh Sheet Metal he was a member of Sokol Assn Prokop Velky lodge C S A and Z C B J Karel IV. Surviving are his wife Esther Klersey a son Milton a stepson Don Heim three grandchildren one great grandson and two sisters in Czechoslovakia. Services will be at Brush chapel at 2 p m Friday with Rev A T Washington burial Czech National. Friends may call after 3 30 p m Thursday.

Cedar Rapids brief: Courthouse announces John B. Reilly will lead Linn County Legal Aid Office starting Monday, replacing John F. Siebenmann who becomes municipal court judge Saturday. Reilly, the sole Linn County applicant, has lawyer and judge experience and community knowledge. The office may go month to month and could affiliate with federal Office of Economic Opportunity, with possible expansion to indigent criminal defense.
William A. Ross a 25 year old from Whittier was hospitalized with a possible back injury after his Linn county snow plow slid into a ditch and rolled onto its side on Forty-second Street NE near Linn Junction. The sheriff said the truck began sliding backward while ascending the incline.

Buddy L Price 48 of 940 Twentieth avenue SW was held on a drunk driving charge after a Wednesday traffic crash at Eighth avenue and Third street SE. His vehicle ran a red light and struck a car driven by Vicki L Cullen of 1826 Bever avenue SE. No injuries were reported and Price awaited arraignment.
Gov Ray signed an extradition order for Ray D. Childers to Arkansas. Childers, freed on bond, seeks delay via habeas corpus while Linn County judge continued the fugitive hearing to Jan 5. Arkansas officials defend prison reforms and argue Childers faces no greater risk than other inmates.
H R Block has provisionally accepted a consent order from the FTC prohibiting use of customers tax return information without consent and barring certain claims about tax prep services The agency says Block did not admit wrongdoing and notes alleged improper advertising and a case where customer income lists were shared with a joint venture to solicit mutual funds and life insurance
Nevin, a 1969 UI law school graduate, heads the liquor unit and says illegal liquor movement across Iowa borders is the division’s biggest enforcement problem. He estimates substantial revenue losses annually and notes ties to the public safety department. He previously worked with a public accounting firm in Los Angeles.
