Missouri Attorney General J E Taylor completed review of extradition papers for Dr Robert C Rutledge wanted for first degree murder in Cedar Rapids Iowa. Papers found in order and returned to Governor Phil M Donnelly who is expected to set a hearing date. Byron C Hartman a 29 year old St Louis instrument designer died at the Roosevelt hotel on December 14.

Coe Band Invited to Presidential Inaugural Again

The Coe College military band has been invited to represent Iowa at the upcoming presidential inauguration for the fourth time in 20 years. Director Stan ley Vesely must raise about $4,000 to cover transportation and lodging, with $1,500 already raised. Vesely has led Coe bands to inaugurals since 1929 and previously won a top prize in 1933.

Warmer Weather Seen for Friday

Cedar Rapids posted a low of 4 above as a cold wave pressed across Iowa. Thursday lows ranged from minus 16 in Decorah and Spencer to minus 5 in Waterloo with no new snow statewide. Roads were open but slippery, with icy spots near Toledo and in the Cedar Rapids area while southeast highways remained normal.

Surgery Wrong Lung Operation At Glenn Dale Sanatorium

A government hospital performed surgery on the right lung of a tubercular patient instead of the diseased left lung. The Tuesday procedure at Glenn Dale sanatorium damaged the good lung, with the patient a 35 year old woman in serious but stable condition. The preliminary report cites a mistaken operative schedule listing the right side and notes Dr Frank Ashburn as the surgeon.

Pilot faints but landing is achieved on icy lake

Faribault Minnesota pilot James De Grood fainted while three passengers watched as the four passenger Stinson Voyager landed itself after the pilot collapsed. The plane touched down on a lake and then nosed into shore, injuring De Grood’s skull while the others escaped unharmed. The men, brothers George and Victor De Grood and Louis Slinger, were later treated or released.
