Zeller retires Linn County sheriff after 14 years

Don Zeller leaves the Linn County sheriff’s post after 14 years in which he built a revenue generating office. He expanded the jail to house more federal inmates and charged inmates room and board, generating about 4.5 million dollars yearly. He also recovered nearly 1 million in overdue court fines. Zeller, 63, was elected in 1994 after a prior stint as jail administrator and introduced restraint chairs and payment drop boxes for fines and fees.
