Soviet condemnation follows U S hydrogen test at Nevada site
In the Nevada desert a hydrogen bomb codenamed Goldstone was detonated 1800 feet underground at Pahute Mesa 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas. The 150000 ton TNT payload aimed to test X ray laser effects for the Strategic Defense Initiative amid international reaction and weather-related delays. The Soviet Tass called the test an evil New Year present as Moscow urged a broader test ban.
