A section of CP Rail's main line hangs over a giant hole after heavy rains washout the track bed and a part of the Trans-Canada Highway northeast of Hope. Rail worker dies under train wheels

Michael Icenbice aged 32 of Cedar Rapids was killed in a yard incident behind Quaker Oats when a train car and engine backed over him. He was an employee of Chicago & North Western. He was struck as the wheels passed over him and dragged about 50 feet. The engineer was unaware until notified. Reported at 5 05 p.m. Cause of death listed as multiple injuries.

Bigger bite of paycheck to taxes

Social Security tax rises for 1981 with higher withholding and subject wages. The tax rate goes to 6.65 percent from 6.13, and the earnings base climbs to 29 700. Benefits ceilings rise to 5 500 for 65-71, 4 080 for under 65, with no ceiling for 72 plus.
