The Daily Record reports temperatures across cities, precipitation totals, and a forecast of increasing cloudiness with a warming trend mid week. It lists recent extremes, barometer readings, humidity, wind data, sunrise and sunset times, and December birth announcements and local obituaries with several church service notices.
John A. Storey resigned as street commissioner of Cedar Rapids effective January 9 to become maintenance superintendent in Palm Springs California with possible later promotion. He has led the street department since October 24, 1950 and previously served in drafts and survey roles since 1944. Examinations for a Civil Service replacement will be arranged and a March 1 replacement target is hoped by Commissioner Halvorson. He praised his fellow workers and noted the department’s strong performance.
Attorney Donald T. Hines was named Monday to aid the city in the Williams and Hunting injunction action. The Peoples Bank and Trust Co. holds a temporary injunction blocking city plans to buy the former millwork property on First Street SW for a new street department HQ. Hines will work with City Attorney David McGuire and special co counsel Elliott Shuttleworth and Ingersoll on the defense.
A weekly Community Chess club event starts Monday at 7 30 PM at Eastside Recreation Center 401 Seventeenth St SE. The round robin will crown a city champion after about 20 games with final rounds likely in March. Entry closes tonight and a ladder tourney using a national rating system offers periodic prizes. Kenneth R Grant is club president.
As the strike dragged on, deliverymen sought support from other newspaper craft unions while AFL CIO affiliates refused to back the action. The deadlock centered on a $10 weekly wage package and a 35 hour week. Publishers held firm on a $7 offer and a 3 pound bundle reduction. After a Dec 9 union vote against the offer, publishers withdrew the bundle proposal and later re offered it under federal mediators.
Esther M. Johnson 217 B Ave NW Cedar Rapids area cook at the Coffee Den died Saturday from a cerebral hemorrhage. Born January 25 1908 in Vinton she moved to Cedar Rapids three years ago. Survived by two sons Keith and Roger her mother Mrs Kray three sisters and two brothers. She was a Royal Neighbor and Methodist church member with funeral services at the Vinton Methodist Church Tuesday. Burial Evergreen Cemetery Vinton. Friends may call Fry-Holland Cedar Rapids and Passmore’s Central City for viewing. She also belonged to the Woman's club and OES. Her brother Audrey L. Newman of Colton California also survived. Burial Oak Hill Cemetery Central City.
John M. Tichy aged 68 of 1814 C Street SW died at St Luke's hospital after being found ill on a curb near his home. A World War I veteran born December 15 1890 near Solon he lived in Cedar Rapids 38 years. Survived by a brother Wendl of Mt Vernon. Services 2 Tuesday Brush Chapel with Rev J Richard Wagner. burial Czech National. Friends may call after 6:30 p.m.
Evva A. Hoskins 70 of 1219 Center Point Road NE died in a nursing home after a long illness. Born July 11, 1888 in Hedrick she was the wife of Ralph G. Hoskins and mother of Richard C. Hoskins of Cedar Rapids. Survived also by a sister Ithel Rockwell of Ottumwa. Services at Beatty Bearle's 3:30 Tuesday conducted by Rev Hubert L. Sunderman of St Andrew's EUB. Burial Linwood. Friends may call after 7 p.m.
Emil J. Zila aged 46 of 1518 Seventh Ave SE Cedar Rapids died Sunday after a lingering illness. Born September 17 1912 in Cedar Rapids he worked years ago as a drug clerk at May Drug Co He was a World War II veteran and is survived by his son Richard and sister Miss Josephine Zila Services will be at Barta Hesser chapel at 2 Tuesday with Reverend Theodore B Hrubucek burial to be announced by the chapel.
Lola A. Mann died Sunday at age 89. Born November 10, 1869 in Central City she spent the last years under the care of her nephews and their families.
Dorothy Berger Farr 68 longtime Cedar Rapids resident and Cryovac Co employee died Sunday. Born October 25 1924 in Cedar Rapids she was affiliated with St Patrick church. Survived by husband two sons Larry Ronald two daughters Linda Sharon and her parents Fred and Dorothy Berger Bemidji Minnesota. Rosary Tuesday at 7 30 p m Teahen chapel with viewing after 2 30 p m and funeral Wednesday at 10 a m Monsignor Lenihan officiating burial Mt Calvary.
Frank A. Marek 77 of 1546 Third Ave SE died Saturday. Born in Czechoslovakia January 21 1881 he was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception church. Survived by his wife Stella C Schultz and a son Elmer of Kent Field California. Services will be at Immaculate Conception Church Wednesday at 9 with Rt Rev Msgr Maurice Sheehy officiating. Agnes Svoboda of Cedar Rapids and two SUI coeds, Terri Svoboda 20 Carol Ryan 21 and Margaret Weston 19, reached California after a 1800 mile trip in a $25 Ford. They faced car trouble but spent only 46 dollars total for the journey. They will drive home.
A Cedar Rapids woman Mrs. Edwin Lnenicka route 3 received the final rabies shots after a skunk bit her while hanging out wash on Dec 10. The skunk also bit the Lnenickas’ dog. Cedar Rapids Renderers worker Otis Weber shot the animal. The skunk was sent to Iowa City for testing and found rabid. Mrs. Lnenicka was treated at Mercy hospital. The dog was destroyed after rabies confirmation.
The Cedar Rapids city council approved two promotions in the fire department effective January 1. Captain George R. Dvorak will become assistant chief and Lieutenant George J. Kanellis will become captain. Dvorak joined as a fireman in 1938 and Kanellis since 1948. Both were recommended from Civil Service eligible lists by Fire Chief Jesse Hunter.
Courthouse in Cedar Rapids reports tavern owner Peter E Telenson 38 of 315 Fourteenth Ave SE was charged with keeping liquor where beer is sold after detectives found wine and whisky behind the bar at Tel’s Tavern 60 Sixteenth Ave SW. Drunk driving charges followed for Kenneth L Noggle 30 of 1226 Third St NW and Howard B Colson 57 of 1519 Thirty-fourth St NE for incidents around Marion and Center Point Road.
Mary E. Miller was denied a divorce from Harold M. Miller in a court ruling. The decision leaves the couple’s marriage status unresolved and maintains existing legal boundaries between the spouses.
