Firemen reported a blaze started by a wooden clothes basket placed on an electric burner in the basement of Earl Tubbs at 1130 Eighth St NW. The fire damaged a corner and smoke and heat affected the rest of the basement. Tubbs said he left the basket on the burner to dry laundry after bringing wet clothes next door around 1:30 p.m. The ceiling and joists above the heater were burned but flames did not reach the floor above.

An 11 year old Cedar Rapids boy, William P. Fiala, fell through Cedar River ice while retrieving a glove near the county jail. Linn Deputy Sheriff Russell Pratt and three county jail prisoners, Martin Pilicer, John Tiernan, and Leo Johnson, rescued him after he was submerged twice. The boy was checked at Mercy hospital and sent home.
