A gas explosion at a Pocahontas coal mine on the Virginia West Virginia border kills 11 miners and injures none of the 14 who are rescued. Rescue teams inch through slate clogged passages with oxygen equipment as investigators probe cause and inspect the gaseous pit.
Cedar Rapids Public Safety announces Capt. Loren W. Remington will serve a 10 day suspension for an incomplete and inaccurate traffic investigation following a fatal accident involving seven year old Michael Ray Gingerich. Mrs. Edgar Stearns faces a separate charge of failure to have car under control. bond set at 110 dollars. Stearns pled innocent in Municipal court. trial set for January 7.
Two Cedar Rapids men, Donald Roloff and Ted Grapes, were sentenced to 25 years in Fort Madison state penitentiary after pleading guilty to entering a bank with intent to rob the New Vienna Savings Bank on December 18. They abducted farmer Anton Klostermann and forced him to drive before the holdup.
VAN NUYS Calif AP Robert Newbold 31 paid a $20 speeding fine in Municipal Judge Julian Becks court when a policeman wrote a new ticket on his car for illegally parking in the judges reserved space. Newbold pled innocent in court Friday and the trial is set for January 23.

In Long Beach a 15 year old boy, John Lawrence Miller, was sentenced to life imprisonment after pleading guilty to first degree murder in the death of Laura Wetzel. He killed her on November 11 while on a weekend pass from a reform school and later told police he smothered her under blankets "because I felt like killing somebody." The boy and his parents attended court as the judge delivered the verdict.
