Assessor Jim Scolaro announced Cedar Rapids will begin canvassing Friday for the 1942 personal property assessment. He urged residents to cooperate, list property, sign homestead credits, and soldier exemptions to ensure a fair, uniform roll. About 24,500 property cards form records guiding values and depreciation.
Officials describe duties of Cedar Rapids assessors, stressing fairness and courtesy. They note an up-to-date title record system and extensive property records, including 22,000 numeric and 22,000 alphabetical cards, homestead tax credit files, estate inventories, and mortgage records, all open for public inspection.
Attorney General Francis Biddle condemned any policy to bar non-citizens from private employment. Members of Congress said the war department designated seven Midwest and Southwest cities as army establishment sites. The cities listed were Sioux City Iowa Topeka Kansas Pueblo Colorado Fort Worth Texas Paso, Tex Lampa Maria California and Reno Nevada.

Manila dispatch reports 18 year old Filipino Salazar who escaped captors at Mauban describes American and Filipino troops using superior US rifles and tanks. He recounts being beaten with rifle butts before being forced onto an enemy vessel, then swimming ashore and crossing the Sierra Madre to safety.
K. R. Clausen a 73 year old retired navy lieutenant and sole survivor of Lieut. R. P. Hobson crew that manned and sank the Merrimac in 1898 walked into a navy recruiting office in New York and offered his service saying he is in good physical shape and sees roles for him in the navy. Recruiting officers gave no immediate decision.
British radio reported Yugoslav patriot forces dislodged German contingents from positions held six months in west and central Serbia. The report highlights Yugoslav advance against Nazi units.
Word arrived in Cedar Rapids of the Los Angeles death of Helen Blanche Bennett daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Charles S Bennett pioneer residents of the city and sister of the late Harry Fletcher Bennett The Bennett home at Second avenue and Tenth street SE was later razed and burial is planned in the family lot at Oak Hill cemetery in Cedar Rapids
Andrew J. Murray president and general manager of Hutchinson Ice Cream dies at home Friday. Funeral Monday at 9 a.m. at St. Matthew's Catholic Church with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Rosary readings today at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. at residence 1844 Second Avenue, where friends may visit.
Funeral services for Mrs. A Steele wife of Adelbert B Steele of 1742 Sixth Avenue SE will be held at Turner chapel at 2 p.m. Monday conducted by Rev. Ruchol Gilbert. Burial is in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery with friends invited to call at the chapel.
Washington officials say Americans must be patient as the navy concentrates on submarine warfare and reconnaissance. Submarines have sunk several Japanese ships while air strikes target heavy vessels. experts foresee no major fleet engagement soon and expect a remote blockade until air superiority and bases are secured.
