An incoherent man armed with a dummy pistol and fake bomb detonator attempted to hijack Eastern Airlines DC-9 carrying 39 aboard near Atlanta. FBI and police overpowered him after 2.5 hours of negotiations. Nikolai Wischnewsky, a New York resident born in Austria, was identified as the suspect and faced air piracy charges with a possible life sentence. The plane landed in Atlanta where most passengers, many women and children, deplaned.
Charlie Chaplin known as the Little Tramp died in his sleep at age 88 in Vevey Switzerland on Christmas Day. His wife Oona Chaplin and seven of their eight children were at his bedside. Funeral plans were private and likely in Switzerland.
A Cedar Rapids man, Ray Cooper, 23, was listed in serious condition at Mercy Hospital after being shot twice in a room at the Red Roof Inn. Police sought a Cedar Rapids woman, Mary Kay Luter, reportedly armed with a .38 revolver, in connection with the shooting. Luann Weitenhagen, the assistant.
Clyde Tyler, 34, was jailed on murder suspicion under the name John Doe after being found near the Hillside Strangler crime scene. He was taken to Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk for observation and not rebooked under his own name. Police say his mental state prevents questioning and he may later serve as a witness.
