Honolulu AP The navy ended the search for survivors of the flying radar station plane that crashed north of Oahu. Three officers and one enlisted man were saved. two bodies were found and the 17 others presumed dead. Survivors variously described engine loss and post crash fire as the wreckage drifted. A destroyer will stay at the scene as a broader search area was set to cover downwind drift remnants.
French cinema pioneer Charles Pathe, one of the founders of the film industry, died in Monaco on Wednesday at the age of 94. His career helped establish early French cinema and production networks.
Cedar Rapids moves toward a modern building code by adopting a revised ordinance referencing the 1955 Pacific Coast Building Officials Conference code. William Rimmer 33 of Cedar Rapids drowned when his car left Hwy 218 six miles north of Mt. Pleasant and fell into a creek. He was visiting his parents, a state hospital patient in Mt. Pleasant, and his car was found Christmas morning. He was born Oct 19 1924 in Maquoketa, WWII veteran. Burial at Hickory Grove cemetery near Maquoketa.
Sir Edmund Hillary races toward the South Pole with about 325 miles to go in a historic overland bid, aiming to be the first since 1911. He and Vivian Fuchs plan to reconnect at Depot 700, supplies left for Fuchs while his British party struggles with crevasses and tractor trouble.
Two Azores teens aged 19 who hidden aboard a U S Air Force plane from Terceira, Azores, found their plan failed when the craft touched down at Chateauroux near Bourges, France. Gendarmes arrested Luis Humberto Pires and Valadao Lino de Eneres as a Bourges court prepares proceedings.

Orville Brock known as Skippy, a lifelong inmate at Anamosa reformatory, received an outpouring of Christmas cards and gifts from readers across Iowa after newspapers highlighted his story. Beneficiaries included prisoners and staff who were moved by the first holiday kindness shown to him in decades. Skippy, imprisoned since 1908 for obstructing a railroad track, longs to reply to each letter and card, though writing difficulties may prevent it.
