DNA to impose fishing limits on Mississippi River walleye

The DNA plans to cut the walleye and sauger bag limit nearly in half and implement a 21 to 27 inch slot limit. It also proposes halting winter fishing in tail waters below at least one dam to protect dwindling stocks. Fisheries biologists warn of stress from pressure changes on released fish. Local angler Jack Kepler opposes tail water closure, favoring bag and slot limits. The DNR cites winter pressure as a key cause of sauger mortality.
