John A Bailey founder of the Bailey Boot Shop in Cedar Rapids died in Tucson Arizona after two years illness. He was born October 1 1885 in Keota and earlier led Wanamaker’s women’s shoe department in New York and later bought merchandise for a 163 store chain in Columbus Ohio. He retired two years ago and moved to Arizona. He is survived by his wife Vera H Bailey a mother a sister and a brother.
Former Fort Dodge police chief James J. Huebsch was indicted on two counts embezzlement and making a false return by a Webster county grand jury. He was discharged from office ten days earlier over selling pinball machines ordered destroyed by the court. A bench warrant was issued and bond set at 5000 dollars.
In Pella Iowa a father Herman Grootveld age 32 mother 31 and daughter Marilyn 5 were found dead in a fire charred bedroom. Coroners concluded fractures killed the mother and daughter while the father likely died from smoke and flames. A bloodstained axe lay near a gasoline can as investigators sought foul play.
