Newhall man seeks change in Iowa law
Newhall resident David Dye seeks a change in Iowa law after the Iowa Supreme Court refused to relieve him from support obligations for a child from his first marriage. He argues he is penalized for acting responsibly when the child may not be his. Dye’s wages are garnished for a child not his, though he has supported the boy since 1984. His divorce from Sheila Dye occurred in 1985, and he and his current wife Diana face about 50,000 dollars in legal bills since 1989. State Rep. Phil Tyrrell is drafting a bill to let a nonbiological parent sue the biological father for paid support and to challenge the equitable parent doctrine. The Dyes hope a court- or legislative change ends enforcement of this financial obligation.
