Authorities found flight data recorders and police report 13 adults and four children unaccounted for.
Three people died as a winter storm moved through Iowa causing ice on highways. William A. Steelman, 27, of Dallas, Texas, died when his I-80 pickup hit a semi parked on the shoulder near Victor. Tara Adelmund, 19, of Clarksville, was killed on icy Highway 3 near Shell Rock. Cathy Rozendaal, 35, of Sully, died at the I-80 Lynnville interchange in Jasper County. Police reported hazardous conditions citywide from central Iowa to Dubuque.
President elect Bush named Louis Sullivan to be secretary of health and human services in a surprise move over abortion concerns. He also selected Samuel Skinner for transportation, Manuel Lujan Jr for interior, Edward Derwinski to head the new Veterans Affairs Department, and William Reilly to lead the EPA.
Cedar Rapids attorney R. Fred Dumbaugh pleaded guilty to embezzling 741,453 dollars from bankruptcy estates over about 20 years. He told reporters about alcoholism and near suicide before turning himself in to federal authorities on April 11.
