Banks Cut Prime Rates as Prices Rise and Markets Waver

Chase Manhattan lowered its prime lending rate to 20.4 percent from 21 percent, with Wells Fargo following earlier. Consumer prices rose 1 percent in November, lifting annual inflation to 12.5 percent. The Dow edged higher late in trading before retreating on CPI news. Real weekly earnings rose and then slipped as prices climbed. Home financing rose 3.9 percent driven by mortgage costs and housing prices.

Locksley suit rejected by Linn District Court jury

A Linn County jury of five men and three women ruled against Dr. Locksley in his $ dispute with 13 anesthesiologists and two Cedar Rapids hospitals. Deliberations lasted about three and a half hours, verdict delivered to Judge Horan at 1:17 p.m. The defendant considered an appeal on several rulings.

Explosion on Saudi jet kills two children over Persian Gulf

A tire casing exploded in the wheel well of a Saudi Air jet at 29,000 feet, tearing a hole and sweeping two children ages 7 and 13 from the American-made Lockheed TriStar. The 296-passenger flight diverted to Doha where three others were hospitalized and later released.
