Funeral for Michelle Martinko Held at St. Pius X

Michelle Martinko, 18, Kennedy High School senior, was buried after funeral services at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Police continued interviews over the weekend while pursuing leads about a motive in her stabbing death found in her family's car at Westdale Mall.

Three Hurt In Two Car Crash At Williams And Wiley

Three people were injured about 2:30 p.m. Saturday in a two car crash at Williams and Wiley boulevards SW. They were taken to Mercy Hospital by ambulance. Marvin J. Bensand Jr. 44 of Route 1 Atkins driver of a pickup was treated and released. Pollock couple 77 Route 1 Fairfax had unknown conditions. Police say Bensand pulled from a stop sign failing to yield at the intersection and he was charged with failure to yield at a stop intersection.

Haig Declines Entry to Political Life

General Alexander Haig, long speculated as a potential U.S. presidential candidate, announced he will not enter politics. The 55 year old former White House chief of staff said the decision follows a long assessment and he concludes political life would not be constructive for him at this time. He recently moved to suburban Devon after retiring in June as NATO supreme allied commander.

Movie Producer Zanuck Dies at 77 in California

Darryl F. Zanuck, iconic Hollywood producer of the Golden Age, died Saturday in Palm Springs at 77 from pneumonia complications. He passed at Palm Springs Desert Hospital with wife Virginia Fox Zanuck beside him. Survived by son Richard, daughters Darrylin Pineda and Susan Savineau, and 14 grandchildren. Burial set for Thursday at United Methodist Church in Westwood Village.

Troops clash with students at Bir Zeit University

Israeli troops and Palestinian students clashed near Bir Zeit University, 15 miles north of Jerusalem, with seven demonstrators arrested for throwing stones. Dr Gabi Baramki, acting president, said troops chased students onto campus, smashed windows and doors, and hit teachers before a military government representative arrived.

Fog and slick roads blamed for seven Iowa deaths

Heavy fog and slick highways caused multiple fatal crashes across eastern Iowa during the first full Christmas weekend day. Victims include Clarice Veenstra, 61, of Knoxville, and Doris Blanchard, 49, of Des Moines. A Kansas man, four Saudi students, and several others died in crashes near Des Moines, Oskaloosa, Carlisle, Raymond, Fort Dodge, Moville, and nearby areas.

Camera crashes from Sun Bowl stands injuring fans

A 60 pound movie camera unit was left unattended in high winds at Sun Bowl Stadium during halftime and fell from its perch onto spectators. Three people were carried from the stands on stretchers and listed in stable condition at local hospitals.

Truck mishap under Iowa Avenue overpass alienates traffic

A semi truck carrying containers of possible toxic material became stuck under the Iowa Avenue overpass in Iowa City. Fire department and police responded at 1 p.m. and evacuations were prepared, but no fumes were found. The vehicle sustained about $15,000 damage and blocked traffic for over an hour.

Armed bandit robs Donutland Coffee Shop in Iowa City

Iowa City police hunted an armed bandit who robbed Donutland Coffee Shop on South Riverside Drive at 5 16 pm. No injuries reported. The man fled on foot with an undetermined cash amount, wearing a green parka black gloves and a red scarf hiding his face. He stood about 5 10 and stout.

Four appointees named to Iowa boards and committees

Governor Ray announced four appointments to state boards and committees. Thomas Dunbar of Des Moines to the Landscape Architectural Examiners. Robert Simmons of West Des Moines to the Statewide Health Coordinating Committee. Milton Engman of Des Moines to the Solid Waste Disposal Commission. Norman Scott of Ames, a psychology professor at Iowa State University, to the Psychology Examiners Board. Terms run through June 1982 for Dunbar, June 1983 for Engman, and through next year for Simmons and Scott pending Senate confirmation.
