Cedar Rapids Charter Commission Divides Over Final Draft
Some charter panel members refuse to endorse the charter submitted to the City Council after a marathon meeting. The draft, approved unanimously, spurred debate on whether voting to approve equaled endorsement of the proposed government form. Commissioners noted no provision has full backing from all members.
Mayor Salaries and Charter Provisions Debate
The charter outlines a $75 000 annual mayor with full benefits and a seven member part time city council at $10 000 yearly without benefits. The mayor would veto laws but with a two thirds council override. Some commissioners signed the document while others declined and one urged against approval citing misaligned components.
