Robin Oswald, 17, jumped a TWA jet with 87 aboard from St Louis to secure release of Garrett Trapnell, her mother’s lover and prisoner. She taped pretend dynamite to her chest, negotiated from the air, released 19 passengers, then surrendered unharmed with no real explosive. The incident linked to Trapnell’s escape case near Marion Illinois.
In Tama County Magistrate George Stein cleared dancer Dianna L. Neubauer of indecent exposure after a novel courtroom experiment. A female deputy stood 25 feet away as Neubauer wore Band-Aids, and at 10 feet the woman testified the Band-Aids were visible, confirming the innocent verdict.
The Iowa Commerce Commission barred shutoffs when the forecasted temperature would dip below 20 degrees Fahrenheit and when a shutoff would be especially dangerous to health. It stopped short of a November to April blanket ban, citing potential legal and practical issues.
Iowa State Auditor Lloyd Smith, 67, died of a heart attack Thursday night in Fairfield. Elected in 1966 and winning another term last month, he was known for meticulous audits and a flamboyant signature. Governor Ray called him a conscientious public official who saved millions and noted his reappointment will be until 1980. Smith also served as a traveling Baptist preacher, speaking at about 200 Iowa churches in the early 1970s.
