Ex Union Official Sentenced for Tax Evasion in Illinois
John A. Haywood of Collinsville former Hod Carriers union district representative was sentenced to one year in jail and fined 2500 dollars for failing to report about 70000 dollars of income from 1949 to 1952. U S Attorney John Stoddart said the income came from road contractor payoffs to union officials. Federal Judge Charles C Briggle called contractor payoffs an unholy racketeering practice. An unrelated note mentions a British railways garden contest winner with 2344 plants and 55 flower varieties.
