Angel of Hope statue centers grief at Xavier High

A December prayer service at Xavier High School marked by candlelight around an Angel of Hope statue honoring Sandy Hook victims. Kylie DeWees funded the statue with proceeds from her Believe album which raised nineteen thousand dollars after writing music for the tragedy. The annual service, led by Judy Ramsey, will recur each December 6 at 7 p.m.

Memorial Walk Honors Homeless Lives In Cedar Rapids

Linn County residents organize a memorial walk at Catherine McAuley Center to honor two local homeless deaths this year inspired by Des Moines Iowa Homeless Memorial. Participants meet at 5 p.m. and proceed to death sites for a candle lighting ceremony. Torch Club members plan Random Acts of Kindness Day outreach in Cedar Rapids locations.

Johnson County to Close Center and Pools for Repairs

Johnson County announces planned closures at the Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center and pool for heat recovery coil replacement and painting. The entire facility at 220 S Gilbert Street will close January 4 through 11 for boiler replacement, while the Mercer/Scanlon facility at 2701 Bradford Drive remains open except for holiday closures on Thursday, Friday, and January 1. Police raise funds for cancer center in No-Share November

The Iowa City Police Department gathered 3362 dollars for Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa Hospitals. Over 50 officers participated, donating shaving and grooming funds, while Local No. 16 sold 100 lavender ICPD T-shirts raising 1542 dollars. Lavender ribbons on patrol units were donated by Zephyr Copies.

Piano at Washington Public Library Opens for Public Play

The Washington Public Library invites the public to play or listen to a rebuilt 1888 Model A Steinway grand piano from 4 to 8 p.m. starting today through Wednesday. The instrument is dedicated to Tomorrow's Children and no signup is required.
