Winter Storm Slams Corridor Cutting Power Across Iowa
Eastern Iowa energy users faced outages totaling about 23 000 as crews labored through the night to restore power amid high winds. Cedar Rapids saw 6 to 9 inches of snow with whiteouts on 76th Avenue SW and Wright Brothers Boulevard SW while 84 traffic hazards and 43 property damage incidents were reported locally. The storm spawned deadly crashes on I 35 near Clarion and prompted 80 National Guard troops to assist highway crews. Travel remained difficult from Kansas to Wisconsin with interstate closures and a broader system moving toward the Great Lakes.
