City Council approved ballot language for Cedar Rapids residents to decide on extending the 1 percent local option sales tax for 10 years starting July 1 2014. All revenue would go to establish and maintain a flood protection system on both sides of the Cedar River. The issue stems from a petition after a 20 year extension proposal failed earlier.
City council signaled eminent domain action to acquire three acres at Edgewood Road and Crestwood Drive NW for a new west side district fire station. The fair market value set at $140,000 by a city appraiser. If talks fail, the issue may go to Linn County Compensation Commission after non-binding mediation. Westgate Communities LLC challenges the appraisal and cites poor communication.
City Council endorses two Hilton agreements to name the downtown hotel DoubleTree and place Hilton in management of the hotel arena and adjoining convention complex. Ownership remains with the city for five years with annual budgets and monthly reports guiding maintenance and operations.
4000 LLC, a unit of 2001 Development Corp, will buy the city firehouse site at 427 First St SE for 75000 and invest at least 1170000 to convert the former IMAX Dome Theatre, Paxton Building, and firehouse into about 34000 square feet of office space. The project aims to restore historic features and bring tenants within two years.
