Iowa researchers seek corn byproduct secrets for new products

University of Iowa scientists study steep liquor and gluten inside a single corn kernel to develop biological controls. Led by Charles Cox, with Randall Yoshisato, Paul Peterschmidt, and Beth Godwin, they pursue applications from human foods to metal chelators for detoxifying wastes, supported by a $60,000 Iowa Corn Promotion Board grant.

Farm Credit bailout cleared Senate and sent to White House

The Senate approved a $4 billion Farm Credit System bailout by an 85 to 2 vote, sending it to President Reagan for signature. The package, costing about $1.3 billion to the federal government, creates a Farmer Mac style secondary market for agricultural loans, enabling pooling and resale as tradeable securities. Supporters say it stabilizes long term real estate lending for farmers, while critics call it a sellout to rural banks.

Real estate agent finds $15000 in old stove in Berwyn

Chicago AP reports Remy Burda a Century 21 agent was named sales person of the month for four months. She returned $15000 found hidden in an unused 1950s gas stove in a seller’s Berwyn home to the seller’s daughter who requested anonymity. The money belonged to the seller’s mother who had kept it there. The daughter said she wished for someone like Burda.
