Scientists Plan Underwater Gulf Stream Survey Mission
Six scientists led by Jacques Piccard will ride a silent submarine from south Florida to Nova Scotia next summer. They will drift at about 600 feet depth with the Gulf Stream to conduct a water survey off the eastern North American coast. The submarine, built in Switzerland, can stay submerged up to six weeks. Piccard hopes for a month’s duration.

Silent Submarine PX-15 Aims to Drifting Acoustic Survey
Piccard describes a 1500 mile silent drift mission aboard the PX-15 submarine sponsored by Grumman to study ocean sounds and the deep scattering layer. The 48 foot craft, to be based at Palm Beach, will drift quietly to minimize noise while 29 viewing ports and four electric motors support limited maneuvering.
