Iowa forecast calls for cloudy and warmer conditions with light snow in extreme east. highs 30 to 35, winds 5 to 10 mph, colder by weekend with flurries. Local notices list intoxication case, speeding and traffic fines, new births, and several Iowa deaths with funeral details.
Manila spokesman for President Quirino said the government intends to increase the army by about a third due to the international situation.
Allen Lowell, 43 of 1637 Wildwood Drive NE, is appointed head probation officer for Linn County replacing Stanley Jonas who retires. Judge William J. Matias announced the selection noting Lowell’s background in education, military service, and refugee work in Germany, and his current role with the Iowa department of public safety.
Hanford Post No. 5 American Legion auxiliary plans Christmas food baskets for 23 needy families and five shopping tours for 28 total families including 92 children. Project cost is 350 dollars. other activities include 350 gift wrappings, 24 cartons of cigars to Marshalltown, hospital gifts to Cedar Rapids Oakdale Excelsior Springs and Des Moines, and toy donations to Annie Wittenmeyer home in Davenport.
James L. Keller, 68, of Des Moines pled guilty to intoxication and larceny by shoplifting. Judge William Matias imposed 30 days on each count, suspended after a plea for release, then reimposed a 60 day sentence. Keller later admitted larceny from a building for daytime theft at J C Penney, stealing three sports shirts.
William H. Lohr of Charles City pled guilty to passing a $19 bad check at J. C. Penney in Cedar Rapids on November 15. He was sentenced to 30 days in county jail by Justice Charles Benesh after being picked up in Charles City and returned there to face the charge.
Fifteen Wilson high school students will have their essays published in an annual National Essay Association anthology in Los Angeles. George M. Mark of 312 Twelfth avenue SE died Monday. Services will be at St. John’s Hellenic Orthodox church at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, conducted by Rev. George Hadjes. Burial follows in St. John’s cemetery with American Legion Han ford post No. 5 military rites. Friends may call at Polanski funeral chapel.
Joseph Allan Rogers, 33, accused of first degree murder for the December 3 slaying of Grace Del Vecchio, 35, told police he planned to kill himself but lost his nerve. He said Del Vecchio had agreed to marry him the day before and later refused to discuss it.
Cedar Rapids post office expects a record month for outgoing and incoming mail though not yet surpassing the 1949 one-day peak. Tuesday totals show high volumes with 194,720 incoming letters and 330,216 outgoing letters, while the Postal Transportation Service reports widespread increases and crews working extra trips to maintain speed. District head N P Vanderlinden notes a record mail load this year and cites hiring limits due to five-year training for railway mail clerks.
President Truman signed a 90 day extension of rent controls to March 31 1951 at Congress request to allow review of housing in light of defense needs. Without extension controls would lapse December 31 except where communities keep them until June 30. The bill also lets municipalities abolish controls by city council resolution.

John Deere and Company prepared for the return of striking UAW-CIO members at seven Iowa and Illinois plants. Raymond L. Hunt, 35, of Keota, pled guilty to false uttering of a $20 check in Cedar Rapids on November 17. Judge Floyd Philbrick sentenced him to six months in Linn county jail with 30 days to be served before suspension of the remainder. He was arrested November 20.
In Judge M C Hamiels court Duwa of Washington Ia resumes a replevin suit against Loran Lamb over 3350 muskrat skins alleged stolen from a warehouse on December 28 1949 Evidence of the pelts was presented as Duwa seeks to establish title to the skins some of which he says were sold to a Cedar Rapids farrier The hearing began last month and continues.
Robert L. Hanson filed suit against Virgil Henderson but the case was dismissed on the plaintiff's motion. A counter claim by Hanson was also dismissed on the defendant's motion.
Arthur Wall received a judgment of 1399.44 after Iowa House Insulation Company defaulted in an account suit. Judge Floyd Philbrick noted Wall earned the amount in commissions as production manager for the firm.
Princess Mary wife of Prince George suffered a fractured thigh after slipping and falling Tuesday in Athens. The accident prompted medical care and raised concerns about her condition.
Cedar Rapids service clubs manned downtown kettles with a trophy challenge as the Salvation Army Christmas fund neared its goal. The drive surpassed $4,500 with four days left toward an $8,300 target. A KCRG radio broadcast and a Fruehauf Trailer Co fundraiser were announced to raise more.

Creston AP reports Joe Moore, 21, of near Cromwell died in a hospital from injuries from a two car collision at Cromwell's edge Tuesday. Moore had a broken neck and severe head injuries. Harvey Brandt, 18, of Prescott drove the other car and was not seriously injured.
Cedar Rapids Community Chest campaign costs totaled 7281.13, below the 8390 budget. John Harrell notes this amount is about 3.5 percent of the funds raised, and 424.77 less than last year’s spend. pledges reached 211,147.71 from 22,405 donors, 97.6 percent of the goal, but 10 percent higher than last fall.

Firefighters on three hose trucks and two ladder trucks were dispatched to the Quaker Oats plant shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday after flames appeared on a conveyor line carrying corn cobs to the furfural plant. The blaze was small and caused little physical damage but produced heavy smoke. Firemen from Companies No. 1, 2, 4 and aerial units No. 1 and 2 responded to the alarm.
Police blamed street conditions for a Wednesday morning accident in which 16 year old Geraldine Garvey of 1921 A Avenue NE was knocked down while waiting for a bus at the southeast corner of Seventeenth Street and A Avenue NE. She escaped with a skinned knee after a car driven by Herman C Stale of 1408 Second Street SW struck her and was forced onto the curb.
Washington dispatch reports the defense department identifying 514 additional casualties in the Korean War. The 181st casualty report lists 34 dead 374 wounded 61 injured and 45 missing.
