Fight Looms On Superior Court Setup
In Cedar Rapids a tug of war over the future of the Linn County Superior Court pits abolition advocates against plans to keep and rejuvenate the court. A bar association committee circulates petitions to submit the issue to voters at the March general election. District Court Clerk Arthur Axmear certified a 66 member juror list for upcoming terms. 200 signatures on petitions are required. If abolished, the city would establish a police court and transfer other duties to district court, with juvenile matters currently handled by the superior court affected. The study found the court’s expenses excessive and proposed elimination without reducing overall judicial services. Judge William Matias, in office since July, ordered a juror panel to restore jury trials, noting most attorneys supported restoring the system to better serve the community.
