Cedar Rapids Linn County will hire seven more sheriff deputies a sergeant and six deputies for courthouse security at a first year cost of 530050 including a 40796 equipment charge. The plan raises the property tax levy by about seven cents unless budgets are cut or taxes raised. It may be adopted December 26 and preserves access through the courthouse front and east entrances.
The plan requires third to eighth graders to take annual reading and math tests to judge school performance. Failing schools could gain more funds but may be restaffed after six years if scores do not improve. Eligible students could use federal funds for tutoring or transportation to another public school, not private tuition. The bill authorizes 26.5 billion dollars for the 2002 education budget, about eight billion more than 2001.
