Manchester woman sustains 50 year Christmas gift tradition
Janet Heiserman Woellert of Manchester has given former teachers Dorothy and Erling Hanson a Christmas gift annually since 1949, including three ceramic wise men. This year she brought dinner to the Hanson home. Former Gov. Terry Branstad suffered a heart attack and was listed in serious condition after exercising at a YMCA. He is resting comfortably. Blake Larsen praised as a top offensive line prospect for Iowa Hawkeyes under coach Kirk Ferentz.

Angie King of Des Moines a former Iowa State Education Association leader was drafted to be Iowa's seventh presidential elector after blizzard conditions sidelined Lyle Otte. King and six other Democrats cast Iowa's seven votes for Gore and Leiberman, affirming a 4 144 vote margin over Bush Cheney. Officials certified the result for the national record.

Museum boost and name honor for Muscatine activist
The African American Historical Museum and Cultural Center of Iowa receives a $200,000 gift from Muscatine couple Richard and Mary Jo Stanley. Celebration Hall will be named for Aldeen Davis, longtime Muscatine activist, teacher, journalist, and advocate for African American education. Davis died last August at 84.

Toddler among 3 killed in Evansdale house fire
Three people including a toddler died in a Evansdale house fire at 915 Second Ave. The man was found at the front door and the woman and boy were located inside. Two firefighters were injured on ice. Investigators had not named the victims.
