Recruiters in Cedar Rapids report the enlistment of three army veterans for additional service. Raymond Alkire, 22, of 2090 High Drive SE, becomes private first class. George Guthrie, 21, of 615 Fifth Avenue SE, becomes corporal. George Haller, 32, of 707 Fourth Avenue SE, becomes private. All are sent to Camp Chaffee Arkansas for assignment.
Gaylord Rupener a 60 year old construction engineer for the federal government died Sunday. A World War I veteran and Iowa City native he attended Iowa City High School and the University of Iowa College of Engineering. O J Neff a 90 year old pioneer grocer died Monday in Decorah hospital after a 50 year career in the local grocery business. Born November 23 1865 in Norway he came to the area at age five. Survived by his wife a son Amos of LaPorte City and five married daughters Melvina Toefsen Thelma Digre Mildred Hennings Louise Flickinger and Jeanette Nelson of Albert Lea MN Services set for Wednesday at 2 p m at First Lutheran Church in Decorah.

Eber Snodgrass 74 of Hudson former Cedar Rapids resident died early Sunday in a Waterloo hospital. Survived by two brothers Robert of Cedar Rapids and James Snodgrass of California and two sisters Mrs. William Warner of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Celestia Ackerman of California. Services set for Wednesday at 1 30 p m in Hudson.
Services for George W. Willis of 1132 Thirteenth Avenue SE Cedar Rapids will be held at Beatty-Bearle funeral home at 10 am Wednesday. The Rev D O Bell of Waterloo will officiate and burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. Friends may call after 7 30 p m Monday at the funeral home.
Private services for Edith L Ruus age something who died Thursday will be held in the Rohn chapel at 10 am Tuesday led by Dr H M Grant. Burial is in Linwood cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
London AP reports a Labour MP sent photographs of a near nude performer to Prime Minister Eden after an Oriental tummy dance at a stag party for 100 post office workers in a Whitehall annex. MP Arthur Lewis criticized the act as disgraceful while Eden was ill and declined comment.
Merchants especially grocers revive trading stamps to draw shoppers amid fierce competition. Analysts note a year worth about one billion dollars in stamps cashed in for gadgets, with houseswives perceiving a food bill rebate. Stamp firms profit from stamp sales and unredeemed stamps while merchants may see up to forty percent higher trade when alone in town.

George Beck, 77, of Kalona sustained head injuries after being thrown against a windshield in a Sunday auto collision near Iowa City. He was listed in good condition Monday at Mercy Hospital. Beck rode with Ivo Grady of Kalona in a collision with Richard Fowler, 18, of Iowa City. Fowler and two others avoided injuries.
The Iowa Executive Council approved buying radio telephone communication sets for Iowa City Estherville and Spencer municipal airports from Straley Flying Service Clinton at 351 dollars each. The cost will be shared with the cities.

Pyle 28 of 1007 Tenth Street NW pled innocent after being stopped at a service station at the junction of Highways 30 and 218 south of Cedar Rapids with an open liquor container in the front seat. bond set at 500 dollars.
Harry F. Donaldson, 28, alias James Ferguson and Paul Matson, jailed in Linn County on forgery charges. He allegedly forged the name Paul Matson on a $74.13 check cashed in Cedar Rapids on Oct. 28, drawn on Fairfax Savings Bank, and is held as a parole violator after returning from Phoenix Arizona.
A Cedar Rapids man told the sheriff he was forced to drive into a ditch on Blairs Ferry road early Monday by an oncoming car. Rex Brown of 1316 Nineteenth avenue SW said his car broke a telephone pole and he could not obtain a description of the other vehicle. He estimated damage at about $300.
Paul Brundage reported to the sheriff that 45 to 50 Rhode Island pullets were stolen from his farm late Saturday. He fed the chickens in the morning and found them missing upon returning after a day away. He valued the loss at more than $80.
Governor George M. Leader urged Westinghouse Electric and two striking unions to enter binding arbitration of their contract dispute. Union leader Art Riordan indicated the IUE would accept. a company spokesman offered no immediate comment. Arbitration would allow workers to return to duty while talks proceed.
Taipei dispatch cites Nationalist reports claiming nearly 300000 intellectuals were arrested by Communist authorities in China during the past year as part of a purge of dissenters from Communist ideology.
The Cedar Rapids council Adopted a $485 000 budget for general services and a $517 800 police budget with no changes to police and fire funding.
