New London’s wind gamble pays off for a small town
New London built a 426 foot wind turbine in 2011 to curb rising power costs. It now provides just over a quarter of local electricity, sometimes selling excess to Danville. The $4 million, funded by revenue bonds and a $100,000 grant, has mostly broken even after maintenance costs. Residents largely supported the project, though a few warned of financial risk. The turbine’s warranty has expired, and its longevity remains untested, with annual inspections and a projected 20 year life.
