Surgeons used stem cells from the fat tissue of a 7 year old to repair nearly 19 square inches of skull bone in a young girl. Doctors called it the first use of stem cells to regenerate bone in a human. Fat was taken from the girl's buttocks and used to rebuild the skull.
German surgeons report using fat derived stem cells from a 1 year old girl to repair most of a 19 square inch skull defect after a fall. The approach, using adult stem cells, produced bone replacement though causality remains unproven. The girl recovered enough to remove her protective helmet weeks after surgery.
