Deadly El Nino storm haunts California with more rain foe
A brutal Mideast El Nino storm eased after five days of heavy rain and high winds leaving nearly 2 million without power. Nine deaths were blamed on the weather including three women swept by a flood in Carlsbad and two in Oregon. Forecasters warn another storm is headed for the Bay Area near Monterey with mudslide risk rising in Santa Cruz and across Southern California.

Study backs diuretics as first line for high blood pressure
A government sponsored eight year study in JAMA involving 33 357 patients aged 55 plus across 623 sites finds the generic diuretic chlorthalidone more effective than the newer lisinopril and amlodipine in lowering blood pressure and preventing complications. The study notes diuretics are far cheaper and urges doctors to prescribe them first and include them in combination therapy when needed.
