Robins approves annexation of 730 rural acres

Robins City Council unanimously approves voluntary annexation of about 730 acres after a public hearing. About 80 residents attend, most in favor, as Cedar Rapids and Robins seek inclusion to avoid involuntary action by Hiawatha. State approval and hearings planned for late January or February.

Arctic blast spreads wintry weather across Plains and Midwest

An arctic front sent blizzards through the Plains from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi Valley and dropped temperatures across Nebraska, Wyoming, the Dakotas, and Minnesota. Winds reached up to 50 mph with readings near 60 below zero in places, while Iowa faced near zero temperatures and wind chills to minus 30.
