Washington. If Rep Mike Espy is named secretary of agriculture he would owe his funding to political action committees. In 1992 Espy’s re election committee raised 155800 of which 123000 came from PACs. Contributions came from milk and sugar producers cattle associations cotton growers and rice farmers. The PACs could not know Espy would become agriculture secretary. The amount from PACs is unusual but not unprecedented. Espy represents a poor district and relies on business and PAC funds.
U S Marines and French Legionnaires escorted CARE food convoys to Bonkey and three nearby villages within 30 miles of Baidoa. A Cobra helicopter provided air cover as Humvees and tanks guided the relief run. Looting fears and new violence persisted amid the famine relief effort.
